S/V Windy

Spent about two months training and trying to be a captain on this four masted schooner in Chicago.

Due to financials they had to let me go, business was down almost 75% from last spring. Enjoyed my time getting to know the crew and the boat, and with my daughter Sydney.

Jellyfin media server

Purchased another recycled computer with a pentium G4560 and 16GB RAM. I had a 160 GB SSD and a 12TB full size drive that I could use in it.

The SSD only has the ubuntu, jellyfin, samba, clam antivirus, and webmin installed on it.

The 12TB drive will be used for movies and shows.  The pictures, music, and personal videos are on the DATA server which gets backed up and has raid setup with qty 4 3TB drives.

Jellyfin is a really cool media solution that can run on several different operating systems.  The have also developed apps for apple and android, and smart tv sets.

Will also setup jellyfin on my delivery laptop.  Due to the file structure of ubuntu is different than the windows setup.  So will have to develop a python script that will modify the playlist when transferring it from ubuntu to windows.

New backup server

Invested in the HP pro 600 desktop system, added 5.5 TB’s of drives to this system.

Installed ubuntu pro, samba, ngix web server, cryptsetup, webmin, and antivirus.

Setup raid zero to begin with, then when I update the drives to SSD hopefully can do a raid 1. OS is already on a smaller SSD.

There is encryption also on the raid zero partition, and will continue to do that with the new drives, and the external SSD drives that are part of the backup solution.

Not only will upgrade the drives but also update the memory to 32 GB, and also the CPU to an I-7.

My old ts421 just wasn’t cutting it with being a server for video, and being a backup server.  The sync was taking way to long.

This new server was able to back up my data server and the web servers in about 48 hrs.  So it already has enough power to make it happen.  I estimate that the backup shell script will only take about 48 hrs to complete, the ts421 use to take about 10 days to complete.  So this is quite an improvement.
