2024 summary

Well 2024 will go down as one of my worst years in my delivery/captain business.

I got some other things done, like investing in a new drone, upgrading my network to gigabit at home.  Got my sony receiver repaired, and worked on setting up a comcast business modem with my servers for more protection and running websites.

Also found a sweet deal on a Big Green Egg 🙂

Got https://marine-captain.com/ up and running with SSL and https://alaskaeaglecharters.com/ up and running also with SSL.

This year my captains license expires in August on the 24th.  So in May I will submit a package to the USCG for renew with medical, 500 ton near coastal, and 1600 ton mate.

Also in this month will get my web server running for https://prosailingschool.org/ which is my nauticed.org sailing school.

Not sure what I will be doing this year.  Maybe a few deliveries here and there, some instruction, and possibly get the alaskaeaglecharters.com company kicked off.

Hans Christian 38 delivery ilwaco to St helens

Was contacted by this owner to help bring his sailboat from the coast down to pdx. We had issues with cooling on Tuesday morning which delayed our departure to Wednesday morning. Upon departing we ran into some fuel issues with the lift pump and loose hose connections. Later in the day we made Rainer, and as we were pulling into the dock the coolant pump started singing.

Next day we tried to push on but the coolant pump started leaking water so we stopped in St Helens. Owner will hopefully get his boat towed to pdx, where he will spend time repairing his engine.

The river was beautiful and crisp, and quite enjoyable in December 🙂

New web server for marine-captain.com

I purchased an intel NUC7i5BNH, and installed ubuntu 24.04.1 with Apache, PHP, MariaDB, and phymyadmin. As well installed antivirus, webmin, timeshift, and resilio sync.

The duplicator back-up I did before I returned the synology NAS worked perfectly upon re-installation. Its a zip file and just put into the root wordpress folder and with in a few minutes the whole wordpress site and SQL is back up and running.

This little unit only costed about $80, so I am planning on investing in a couple more units to run my other websites.
